Project Brief

John J Doyle Ltd was awarded a contract by LM Services to dismantle the existing flues, remove from site and design new flue systems for St Bernards Primary School. St Bernards is a primary school located in Belfast, County Antrim. This school teaches boys and girls from the ages of 4-11 years old.

John J Doyle Ltd was tasked with updating the design, supplying material and labour for the installation of 2 new flue systems serving the existing boilers.  The new designs for the flues would comply with the regulations set out in Gas safe and IGEM/UP/10 whilst also complying with clean air act.

Before any installation could occur John J Doyle Ltd completed a drone survey to give a complete survey of the chimney at a high level. This was to help prevent any unforeseen issues that may not be determined from ground level.

Result

John J Doyle Ltd carry out annual surveys of flue systems across sites for the Education Authority. From the survey at this site, it was discovered that the existing mild steel flue system was not compliant with gas regulations. We were asked to design, supply and install a new flue system to suit the existing boilers in order to make them compliant.

At design stage, we carried out the flue sizing calculations inhouse to determine the overall flue diameter serving the main school. Due to the size of the header, we would not be able to install a continuous stainless-steel liner down the existing chimney, therefore we decided to use a thermosetting liner which would allow us to achieve the same outcome, but at a larger diameter.

The school’s meals kitchen was a smaller diameter, therefore we could go with a continuous stainless steel flexible liner to termination point.

Due to the steep incline around the boiler house, John J Doyle had to hire specialised high-level access equipment in order to facilitate the installation of the liners.

Installation of the flues were completed over a 4-day period during half term break to prevent any loss of heat to the school.
