Project Brief

Slumberjack Coffee contacted John J Doyle Ltd for a chimney system to suit new coffee roasters at its state-of-the-art facility in Antrim, Northern Ireland. Slumberjack Coffee supplies major retailers such as Lidl, TK Maxx and specialist foodservice and retail outlets.

John J Doyle Ltd designed, supplied and installed the flue system to suit the new and existing coffee roasters. Coffee roasters can reach very high temperatures, requiring a specially designed flue system. Additionally, this project had a very tight deadline.

Result

Slumberjack Coffee approached John J Doyle Ltd to design, supply and install a flue system to suit the new and existing coffee roasters.

The coffee roasting process uses very high temperatures, the extraction would hit approximately 600°C and peak temperatures of 800°C. Many standard flue products have a maximum temperature of 600°C. This is why product designation and CE marking are so important.

Due to these high temperatures, John J Doyle Ltd opted for flue products with 100mm ceramic fibre insulation ensuring surface temperatures of the flue to a maximum of 70°C.

A Venturi style terminal was chosen as the termination of the flue system required a product to let air flow freely out of the chimney, without any backpressure which helps the roasting and cooling process and to prevent any water ingress.

Initially, the fitting team was booked for the installation of one coffee roaster. Once on site, an additional system for a second coffee roaster was requested. This created a very tight deadline but the fitting team worked over the weekend so that roasting could start that Monday.

The project was completed on time and on budget. All chimney and flue products were supplied and installed compliant with European and regional standards.
